ORANGE:

In the middle of a street of Black & Grey a woman lights
a cigarette in Orange. She’s a revolution, revelation,
picture bomb, a lighthouse in the dark. All eyes around
her looking distant as she sparks up, conscious of this
electric minute – fabulous.

COLLABORATION:

This is one of a series of Artworks inspired by collaborating
with Glenn Davidson of Artstation (http://www.artstation.org.uk/
& students at the Welsh School of Architecture in Cardiff – on
the RiverSonics project. They are describing a journey, in sound alone,
along the river Taff from Source to Sea. The students are
also creating their own visual language to ‘score’ the sounds they
have collected to enable them to build an installation-soundscape
recreating their journey. The Score is now being taken on by students
at the School of Music & Drama (Cardiff) who will interpret it through
their own instruments & re-present to the Architecture School.
I feel privileged to be a part of this project & to see two brilliant colleges
not only helping one another, but also exchanging skills & collaborating to
create something new out of the combination of them both. My thanks to
all members of staff who have given the project 100% support –
this work would not have been possible without it.

NOT LOOKING BACK:

Make it long, keep it going. It’s You, it’s You,
you’re a soundscape, you’re stillness, your waves
hit the foreshore, crystal, fantastic.
Move on! Move on! Turn on the blue light!

GO! GO! GO!:

Who’s that holding ‘Stop’ & ‘Go’, Blue Stars tattooed
on his neck, as stones, like tiny moons, cling to my
wheels? Paper Dolls run in circles leaving lipstick
kisses on my windows. In time they turn from red to
black & block my path, mocking love between me & the Sun.

THIS DOOR IS ALARMED:

I’m shaking from the inside out, surrounded by tea & coffee
darlings. Dancing for the moon, I feel laminated, low on sleep.
I reach out then pull back, not ready to touch anything yet.
I’m raw, but you look happy, have you been here before?
You ask me,
“Do you enjoy the weather?”
I don’t want to bring you down, but I stick to the shade,
hope you’ll get the message without asking again, not be
offended.
You point,
“Look! A Bosendorfer on the beach! Is that Nickie on strings?”

I want to leave, slip away silently, leave you smiling,
go up into the mountains & breath.

BRING & BUY:

Driving in the afterglow of summer sun, burned from lack of
practise. A visit from  friend I’ve known since 11, catch up
conversations, reflections on the here & now. How different
our occupations, how similar our points of view. Both doing
what the other thought they would & should & each an inspiration.
Reading Trevor Cox’s ‘Sonic Wonderland, pack the car, turn on
the radio, hit the road, open the door, collaborate & see what we
can bring to uw.

CROSSING THE BRIDGE AT PONTYRIDD:

Standing at the apex of William Edwards beautiful stone arc
we look north to the Brecons then south to the Atlantic,
the Taff’s relentless journey beneath us & the heat of
summer sun on our skin. In the moment, not escaping,
but celebrating, moving.
